Lutz Becker, Suprematism + Time: Malevich and Film, 1997
In 1971 the exhibition Art in Revolution - showing for the first time the full impact of the Russian avant-garde on the twentieth century art - was held at the Hayward Gallery in London. The show was curated with great personal courage and passion by Camilla Gray, at a time when the Soviet authorities still denied that this revolutionary art movement had any historical value whatsoever. Two films resulted from the collaboration of Lutz Becker and Camilla Gray on this exhibition: Art in Revolution and Malevich Suprematism. Becker's essay explores some hitherto neglected aspects of Malevich's work, relating to his ideas about time, montage, and film.
Lutz Becker is a film-maker and a painter. He has been central to many art projects in London and elsewhere. In 1971 he has worked with Camila Gray on films for the Art and Revolution show; in 1996, he has made film introductions to different sections of the Art and Power show at the Hayward Gallery in London.
